Christian doctrine refers to the teachings of the Bible that Christians believe, practise, and teach. These beliefs are formed through the systematic study of the Old and New Testament Scriptures.
Christian doctrine covers everything the Bible teaches. Because the scope of Scripture is so vast, studying all its teachings can feel overwhelming. One helpful way to approach this is to organise Christian doctrine into different categories.
There are many Christian books and study materials that explore one or more of these areas and can serve as useful guides alongside your personal study of the Bible.
Studying Christian doctrine is a lifelong pursuit. The breadth of Scripture makes it impossible to exhaust its teachings in a lifetime, yet this should encourage us to keep learning.
The more we understand God's Word, the more we discover that there is still much to learn. Every effort invested in understanding biblical truth is worthwhile because what we learn from Scripture shapes our beliefs, strengthens our faith, and influences how we live.
A classical approach to studying Christian doctrine divides it into distinct categories. The following is an outline of fifteen major areas of study, each focusing on a particular aspect of biblical teaching.
Theology: The Study of God
Theology is the study of God. It examines His nature, attributes, character, and works. The term can also be used more broadly to refer to the study of Christian doctrine as a whole.
Bibliology: The Study of the Bible
Bibliology focuses on the Bible itself. It examines divine revelation, the formation and preservation of Scripture, its authority, and its role in the life and faith of Christians.
Christology: The Study of Christ
Christology focuses on the person and work of Jesus Christ. It explores His nature and identity, His life and ministry, His death and resurrection, and His ascension and glorification.
Pneumatology: The Study of the Holy Spirit
Pneumatology examines the person and work of the Holy Spirit. It considers His nature, His role in bringing people to faith in Christ, and His work in the life of the Christian.
Anthropology: The Study of Humanity
In Christian doctrine, anthropology is the study of humanity from a biblical perspective. It examines the creation of human beings, their nature and purpose, the Fall, and humanity's need for redemption.
Soteriology: The Study of Salvation
Soteriology focuses on God's work of salvation through Jesus Christ. It explores Christ's death and resurrection, humanity's response to the Gospel through repentance and faith, and the relationship between faith and works. It also examines key aspects of salvation, including justification, assurance, sanctification, and the final glorification of those who belong to Christ.
Angelology: The Study of Angels
Angelology examines the nature, roles, and ministry of angels as presented in Scripture. It considers their place in God's purposes and the ways they serve Him.
Demonology: The Study of Demons
Demonology focuses on the nature and activities of Satan and demons. It examines their opposition to God's purposes, their influence as described in Scripture, and their ultimate judgement.
Ecclesiology: The Study of the Church
Ecclesiology examines the nature and purpose of the Church. It explores the Church's foundation, mission, organisation, ordinances, and responsibilities, as well as its place in God's plan.
Evangelism: The Study of Sharing the Gospel
Evangelism focuses on the message of the Gospel and how it can be communicated faithfully and clearly to others. It examines the biblical content of the good news about Jesus Christ and the responsibility of Christians to proclaim it.
Missiology: The Study of Christian Mission
Missiology examines the Church's mission to take the Gospel to the world. It explores the Great Commission, the call and work of missionaries, the spiritual needs of different communities, and the biblical principles that guide missionary work.
Eschatology: The Study of Last Things
Eschatology focuses on the events and realities associated with the end of the age and the fulfilment of God's purposes. It examines death, heaven and hell, the second coming of Jesus Christ, the final judgement, and the ultimate destiny of humanity and creation.
Ethics: The Study of Moral Conduct
Christian ethics examines moral values and the principles that should guide Christian living. It considers how biblical truth shapes a Christian's worldview, decisions, relationships, and conduct, particularly in matters concerning human life and morality.
Counselling: The Study of Biblical Counselling
Biblical counselling considers how the truths and principles of Scripture can be applied to the challenges people face. It seeks to address their spiritual, intellectual, and emotional needs through biblical guidance, wisdom, and encouragement.
Devotion: The Study of Spiritual Disciplines
This area of study focuses on the spiritual disciplines taught in Scripture and practised throughout the history of the Church. These disciplines help Christians cultivate their relationship with God and grow in their faith. They include the study of Scripture, prayer, fasting, meditation, confession, and worship.
A Lifelong Pursuit of Biblical Understanding
These categories provide a helpful framework for studying the major themes of Christian doctrine. Each one directs our attention to a particular area of biblical truth, allowing us to examine Scripture more carefully and develop a clearer understanding of what it teaches.
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we should give ourselves to learning the Word of God throughout our lives. We may never exhaust the riches of Scripture, but we can continue to grow in our understanding of God's truth and allow it to shape our beliefs, character, and conduct.
