One of the most difficult experiences for a Christian is loving Jesus while still struggling with sin. You know what is right, you genuinely desire to obey God, yet there are moments when your actions do not reflect the new life you have received.
This struggle is not unique to you. The apostle Paul described it honestly:
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice.
-- Romans 7:19 (NKJV)
The Christian life is not the absence of conflict; it is learning how to overcome through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Goal Is to Grow In Obedience
Jesus said,
If you love Me, keep My commandments.
-- John 14:15 (NKJV)
Love for Christ is expressed through obedience. Yet Scripture never teaches that believers become instantly sinless. Instead, as we grow in obedience, sin should gradually lose its influence while the fruit of the Spirit becomes increasingly evident.
When a believer sins, the Holy Spirit is grieved. The result is often a loss of spiritual peace and joy—not because God has abandoned His child, but because the Spirit lovingly convicts us and calls us back to repentance. As we confess our sin and receive God's forgiveness, deep fellowship is restored, and our spiritual health is renewed.
The Three Spiritual Laws
In Romans 7 and 8, Paul explains why this inner battle exists by revealing three spiritual laws at work within the believer.
1. The Law of the Mind — the inward desire to love God and obey His will.
2. The Law of Sin and Death — the lingering pull of the sin nature that seeks to draw us back into sinful patterns.
3. The Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus — the power of the Holy Spirit that enables believers to overcome sin and live in righteousness.
The encouraging truth is that the Spirit is stronger than the flesh. Victory is not achieved through willpower alone, but by learning to live under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
Three Practices That Strengthen the New Life
God has given every believer practical ways to walk in the Spirit. These are not religious duties—they are the means by which His life becomes increasingly active within us.
1. Let the Word of God Fill Your Life
God's Word renews the mind and strengthens the inner person. As we read, study, meditate on, and speak the Word, the Holy Spirit uses it to shape our thinking and give us strength to obey.
This also includes faithfully listening to sound, Spirit-filled and biblical teaching. The more God's truth fills our hearts, the easier it becomes to recognise and resist deception and sin.
2. Cultivate Fellowship with the Holy Spirit
The Christian life is sustained by an ongoing relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.
Fellowship with the Holy Spirit means spending personal time with God through prayer, worship, thanksgiving, and quiet listening. It is in His presence that we receive wisdom, conviction, comfort, and the strength to live differently.
Power for holy living flows from communion with God.
3. Live a Life of Holiness and Consecration
Holiness is the daily decision to separate ourselves from what feeds the sin nature and to pursue what pleases God.
Consecration means intentionally surrendering our lives to Him—our thoughts, habits, relationships, words, and choices. Every decision to obey weakens the influence of the sin nature and strengthens our walk with the Spirit.
Holiness is not about earning God's love; it is the response of a heart that has already received it.
The Three Must Work Together
These three practices cannot be separated.
The Word gives us truth. Fellowship with the Holy Spirit gives us power. Holiness provides the willing obedience that allows that truth and power to shape our lives.
Without holiness, biblical knowledge and spiritual experiences produce little lasting fruit. Without the Word and fellowship with the Spirit, the pursuit of holiness becomes exhausting. God never intended the Christian life to be lived by human effort alone.
A healthy believer is one who continually feeds on God's Word, walks in fellowship with the Holy Spirit, and chooses a life of holiness.
Living the Life Christ Has Given You
The new life in Christ is not merely about being forgiven—it is about being transformed. Although the struggle with sin is real, it no longer has to be our master. Through the Holy Spirit, God has given us both the desire and the power to obey Him.
As we remain in His Word, cultivate His presence, and live lives set apart for Him, we grow steadily into the likeness of Christ, enjoying the peace, joy, and freedom that belong to the children of God.
