Deeper Fellowship
A poem about grace. It uses one picture, sweeping a house, to tell a true story: God gives the strength to sweep; He knocks and comes in so that we grow closer to Him. Grace comes first, before anything we do. It never leaves us the same.

When I look back at my own life and how far the Lord has brought me, I am thankful. Like every other Christian, this is a journey I am still on. Yet I am so joyful for what the Lord has done that I wrote this poem some time ago, both to remind myself of what has happened and to encourage you, reading this now.
Deeper Fellowship
Before I knew what stirred my soul,
You placed a hunger to be whole.
You put a broom into my hand,
for deeper fellowship, You planned.
I swept away sin's bitter shame,
the hatred that I dared not name.
I tore out selfishness, its lair,
for deeper fellowship to share.
I did not sweep to win Your face,
I swept because You gave me grace.
You cleaned Your way into my heart,
and made me steward of my part.
When I was done, the house was bare,
no dirt, no shame was hiding there.
And in that silence, clean and true,
I made more room for more of You.
Then came a knock upon my door,
a sound I had not heard before.
Not testing me to prove my worth,
but calling me to know Your worth.
I opened it with shaking hand,
and found You, You always stand.
Not earned by all the dirt I swept,
but loved by grace that always kept.
For sweeping does not buy Your love,
Your love came first, from above.
But sweeping makes the way clear,
for deeper fellowship, You're near.
The more I swept, the more we stayed,
and sweeter still our bond was made.
Not to earn You, or Your grace,
but to sit closer, face to face.
Now hear me, friend, who feels it too,
that restless hunger, strange and new.
It is not you, it is His call,
He stirs the heart to give His all.
Do not wait till clean to believe,
He's already near, do not grieve.
So when He stirs you, rise and sweep,
not to earn Him, but to grow deep.
Such fellowship will last and grow,
such joy will deepen as we go.
He will not leave, He drew you in,
the more you sweep, the more within.
Now you will find, as I have found,
a lasting joy on holy ground.
For You and I, and now, friend, too,
have found a joy that carries through.
